WELCOME to Mrs. Nolan's math class! I am happy you are here. In 6th grade math we learn and understand the Michigan Common Core State Standards. These include number systems, ratios and rates, equations and expressions, geometry, and statistics and probability.
We also focus on math process skills. These are math processing skills practiced to encourage deeper thinking and are used at all grade levels. These include perseverance, reasoning, constructing viable arguments, modeling mathematics, using appropriate tools, attending to precision, and noticing structure and making use of it.
Much of our mathematics problem solving and analyzing of concepts happens within a collaborative classroom structure. Much research on the topic of collaboration in math class supports group work and cooperation. Strategies that make use of good collaboration among students are taught and encouraged throughout the mathematics core curriculum.
